Anyone ay idea why i cannot upload files from the internet after installing Avast? It’s definitely the software as I’ve just uninstalled it (not a good idea!) and I can download files with no problem now.

are you saying that you had no connection at all or just cant/couldnt upload files?
a bit more detail would be nice
how long had you had it(Avast!) installed and did it ever work?
there are a multitude of possibilities

I have a DSL connection and it works fine (except for downloading files from the Internet)
I installed Avast on Thursday evening. I only noticed last night that I could not download anything from the internet. I presumed that the problem was with the Internet Service Provider. I right click on an item I want and it just sits, waiting indefintely to download.
I removed Avast this morning and I could download with no problem
I never had any problem downloading before.
I had a look at the thread you gave me but I don’t think its relevant to my problem!

well if you decide to re-install there are plenty of people here who are willing to help in whatever way we can .
If it helps i also am on a DSL connection and i have three pc`s on Avast running through a 4 port router and i also find sometimes i cannot get a line(usually if i have been idle for extended time) so i just reboot and it works

I’ve reinstalled Avast and the problem has unfortunately returned. If there’s anyone out there who can help me with my glitch I’d appreciate it.

do you get any messages ? from avast? check task manager and see you have all 3 programs running
oops there`s 4 AshMail.exe also
Hi, yes all four are there.
An example of my problem is that I cannot download a copy of the ash.jpg on your post. I right click on it, ‘save target as’ and it just sits there indefinitely.

In case it matters it seems to me I have identical problem
I have installed 4.5.561 home EN version (tried other lang too) on XP Pro, reboot, internet DSL up, using IE cannot dowload files (works fine if I use wget on the url), uninstall avast, reboot, DSL up, IE downloads fine now
I have zone alarm (tried turning it off while avast was there but did not help)
I tired this 3 times (install, uninstall) to no avail
still hoping for an answer before they (viruses) get me, my defences are failing as after uninstalling I got a cold - my doc says this is some kind of virus - sooner or later they will get my computer as well

Posssibly clutching at straws here. Check the proxy settings within avast, it may be set to auto and is being detected incorrectly. You can change it to No Proxy, you can also check the settings to ensure it is correct, see image.

unforutunatelly the playing with proxy thingy did not change anything
only file download from IE is broken, html pages/images display fine
I think “the force” is leaving me, any “Obi-One Kenobi” around here to save me before virus infestation gets me ?

Try “pausing” avast! network shield and see if you can download your file/files
Firewall details (software or hardware solution) and also isp details might help.
I’m using XP Pro behind a hub and router/firewall and have no problems with uploads or downloads on NTL cable connection in the U.K.
Pausing/terminating avast (network shield or standard shield) did not make any diff.
My system: (win XP SP1, firewall ZoneAlarm home 5.0.590.015, avast home 4.5.561, USB ADSL modem Sagem 800)

save picture as works, save html page works, displaying pages works (images OK)

when clicking on links to exe/zip/pdf/… and selecting to save to disk, I get file name prompt, then the save hangs, transfer speed remains empty on the dialog box, there is animation on the save dialog, and no network activity detected by (netpersec utility)
