Using Thunderbird on WinXP all has been fine for a few days since I started using Avast. However, this afternoon could not receive msgs, have window to the effect could not connect to server 127.0.0.1; the connection was refused.
Changed the pop server from 127.0.0.1 tls port 110 to the old one pop.att.yahoo.com, ssl, port 995 and receive msgs. Change back to 127 etc and nothing received except the same window that connection to 127.0.0.1 cannot be made.
Can send msgs, and access internet, and use groups & RSS, only POP fails.
This morning received about 12 Windows updates. Could that be relative. Or is there some other setting that can be altered?
additionally, the help screen reads to use the mail protection wizard. There is no such animal in 4.8. Secondly it talks about settings in the .ini, but none such are found.
I’ve had to return to the standard att protocol pop.att.yahoo.com, ssl, port 995 until this is resolved. In the meantime incoming mail is not being checked. Guess that if this can’t be quickly fixed I’ll need to dum Avast and return to my old AV program.
Completely removed AVG via Control Panel Uninstall and then went through the registry which was a chore since many items contain avg. And since then Avast has been working fine through this morning, but not this late afternoon. I’ve again tried changing the pop server in thunderbird from 127.0.0.1, tsl port 110 and was forced to return to pop.att.yahoo.com ssl 995 in order to download msgs from the server. Don’t believe it has anything to do with AVG since all traces were removed several days ago and Avast was checking both in and out emails. Now it’s doing neither.
With XP\Vista, mail detection will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exist. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.
Spam killer applications need manually change email account settings
It’s like: mail client > spam killer > avast > mail server
The antispam program downloads your mail from pop3 server, then checks it and then some mails which could be considered spam deletes. So it must have the mail in it’s hands to be deleted off server. When you click delete in avast!, the virus is deleted from the mail and subject is modified to reflect the presence of a virus, so the mail might not be later recognized as spam by the antispam and will not get deleted from the server.
Still no send/receive. Changed Thunderbird pop to 127.0.0.1, port 11110, no security; and smtp to 127.0.0.1, port 11025, no security. Also tried both with ssl & tls if available). Also tried adding :11110 to the pop & :11025 to SMTP. Refused acceptance. added 11110 & 11025 to redirect ports in email section of avast.
The forum discussion you refer to where I obtained the above settings discusses using another program stunnel which I don’t have. Is that necessary?
FYI, talking with ATT 2nd level tech his opinion was that Yahoo personnel discovered I wasn’t using SSL and blocked access without it.
[att-yahoo-smtps]
;protocol=smtp (removed with ; in front of this)
accept=127.0.0.1:11025 connect:465=smtp.att.yahoo.com
In Outlook Express in the Properties for your Account on the Server tab use
127.0.0.1 for both POP and SMTP servers.
Of course, I’m not certain what is being said since I didn’t know of stunnel. Now I’ve downloaded version 0.9.8k and opening it with winzip only see a bunch of files – no .exe to set it up. Since I don’t understand any of this, guess my quick choice should be to install the Acronis True Image I took a few days ago just prior to uninstalling AVG, and forget about Avast until version 5 is released. (I do enjoy it as it works very well, and uses less resources, if only it would work with my att/yahoo account requiring ssl.)
Thanks for the info and I’ve downloaded stunnel, installed, service installed, & service start (using thunderbird, winxp, att.yahoo.com (dsl).
Have tried every combination for smtp/pop I can think of and avast isn’t checking in or out msgs.
Avast/mail/redirect set at pop 11110, smtp 11025.
Original pop setting is pop.att.yahoo.com, 995 ssl. Have tried all combinations of that with changes to 127.0.0.1, 11110, 110, ssl, never, and tls. (all are refused connection except the original.)
Smtp original setting is smtp.att.yahoo.com, 465 ssl. Have tried all combinations as above except port changed to 11025 & 25. (All are refused connection except the original.)
A clue would be appreciated as to what else must be done or what should be done differently.
Now a couple of hours later and tried to start the computer and and although it reached the windows normal screen it wouldn’t complete loading – hard disk running and wouldn’t stop. Hard booted and received window I’ve never seen before " One of the files containing system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy. Recovery was successful."
Windows then completed and the first thing I did was to stop stunnel service and apparently all OK now. Nothing else was done this morning, except the installation of Stunnel and sent test mgs. Any ideas?
Miles, sorry for your bad experience.
But I can’t imagine Stunnel involved in this thing… it’s not an intrusive software, that will even conflict with anything.
The configuration of Stunnel is written in your post above.
You do not have to check SSL connection to the 11110 and 11025, since the connection is handled by Stunnel.
I’ve used that configuration for years, since I’ve moved to Outlook (that has its own plugin on avast).
Restarted and all OK, except no stunnel icon in taskbar. In start menu went to stunnel service start and receive window reading “error 1056 it’s already running.” (yet I had stopped it before) Still no taskbar icon.
Went back in account settings and tried a few settings and used Never SSL. Still could not send or receive. So went back to normal settings and OK.
At this stage I can only conclude that something is not right with the combination of WinXP, Thunderbird, and Stunnel. And I’ve wasted enough of your time and mine, so will simply go back to the prior image with AVG where mgs are checked – can’t wait until Monday as will need to be set up for business by then. Will look at Avast again in a year or so to see if changes have been made.
