Cannot download new Avast 5

Hope someone can help me here. I’m running windows xp- svc pack 3-outpost firewall and Avast 4.8.I am able to download the Avast 5 setup files, but when I run the file I get a small window popping up that says: “An error has occurred 0(00000000) The last operation performed was: Spawning”. Can anyone tell me whats going on? I have tried multiple times. I have deleted the setup files and tried downloading from different websites but always get the same result. I have also tried shutting down my outpost firewall, but that does’nt have any effect-same result.I have tried with Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers, but again no change. Can someone advise me? Sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

Steve

Try a clean reinstall:

Thanks. I’ll try that.

You’re welcome.

Bare with me here-I’m new to this. I tried to burn the files to a cd, but I get a warning that says “This file has information attached to it which may be lost if you continue to copy. The contents of the folder will not be affected.Do you wish to continue?” I don’t understand how some “info can be lost-but contents won’t be affected”! Should I continue to burn the files to a disc? Is this what you meant when you told me to copy the files to my HDD? Or am I missing something? If not a disc, then what did you mean by “HDD”? (As I said, I’m new to this) Thanks much for the help!

Steve

Nope, not a cd, he meant>>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive

In other words, download it and save it on your pc’s hard drive, rather than download it and immediately run the program.

I have it saved to a folder in “my documents”. Where do I save it to to make sure it’s on my HDD? And once it’s there, it won’t get deleted when I use the uninstall utilities? Thanks!

The “my documents” folder is on your Hard Disk Drive (HDD), it is just a bit of a strange location. I have a folder called imaginatively Downloads (there is even one of those in the “my documents” folder), where I have all my downloads stored.

You can run the program installation file (or uninstall utility) from the “my documents” folder.

Thanks!

You’re welcome.

After running the uninstall utility (to uninstall Avast 4) I did a search for any Avast files and found 4 files that I cannot delete. It says “Access denied” when I try to delete one of the files and it says “cannot delete-cannot read from the source” when I try to delete the others. Is this a problem? Are these files going to interfere with the new Avast download? And if so, how do I get rid of these? Thanks again!

Did you run the uninstall utility from safe mode, this is essential ?
What files did you find and where ?

when searching had you installed avast 5 ?

Access denied is commonly as a result of the self-defence module protecting avast files/folders. Hence the above questions.

I ran the uninstall utility from safe mode, as instructed. Also, I had not installed Avast 5 yet.

OK and what were the files and their location that you found ?

Well this is strange. I did another search while waiting and the files are gone?? So I guess it’s not an issue. Going to install the new Avast 5 now. Again-THANK YOU- all of you for your help! I sure appreciate you guys!

Steve

No problem.
