cannot download updates due to proxy.

Hi
I get my internet through my university and so the connection is extremely limited as to what it can do.
Basically i can only run programs that have the option of letting me specify a socks 5 server , login and password.
Ive been hit with 2 viruses over the last month and ive cleaned them up but avast didnt pick up on them due to not updating.

if anyone knows how to get around this your help would be greatly appreciated

thanks
peepo.

Wouldn’t SOCKS4 work for you?

To set up proxy settings in avast, do the following: start avast, go to Settings → Updating (Basic) → Advanced → Proxy Settings.

You can set a SOCKS4 proxy there…

thanks for the advice but sadly it doesnt work.

i set up the socks 4 proxy on port 1080 (i think thats the right one) but it couldnt connect. and it also didnt work if i let it autodetect.

is there any other suggestions?

thanks

i’m not too sure…but then is port 1080 correct in your case?

yeah im about 90% sure that its port 1080 for socks and 80 for http proxys

1080 works on other programs i have running through socks 5 setups. (msn , IRC etc…)
