Cannot get adnm to work

Have 25 wireless laptops and a Win2k3 server. This network has it’s own router with DHCP server. It connects to the internet through the main network which has it’s own firewall/proxy. All the laptops have Avast pro on them but the demo has expired. Just bought 68 licenses and got a license.dat file. Installed ADMN on the server with MSDE option. I log into the ADMN console and can do I find on the computers using Active directory.

It sees all the computers that are in the domain and adds them to the computer catalog and if they are on and I have the IP address option turned on, it will also see the IP address, but that’s it. They remain gray, fill in NO info about the computers and I can go no further. Help!

One more note: When I go to the management servers tab and click on the only entry (Server), it has nothing in the WAN or LAN ip address, server id is 0 and SQL server: is blank? Is this normal? If not how do I fix it?

That’s how it is in mine, and mine is now functioning normally.
This sounds similar to the problems I have been having, have a read through my topics and see if anything in there helps.

Things that spring to mind:

-Do the laptops have their own firewall enabled? If so have you opened the necessary ports?

-Have you installed the Network_Client on the laptops? You can install that from the AMS as long as it knows they exist and are at a certain IP address.

-If you have installed the Network_Client on the laptops, check in c:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini
Scroll down and under [common] there is an entry Database=ODBC if it states Database=XML you need to change it back to ODBC.
That’s what stopped one of my PCs from communicating properly.

Yes they do have xp sp2 firewall enablebut I went in an disable it and it didnt’ change anything.

No. I have been unsuccessful at that also. When I try to push it, it gives me a waiting-Check remote installation logs line and never moves.

I looked at the remote installation logs and it has an error 2 after one of the lines. I played with this for 4 hours last night and finally went home! ARRGGGH.

Can you post that line here?

Using the ‘Net helpmsg x’ at the command prompt (where x is the error number under 30,000),
2 gives me the response ‘The system cannot find the file specified’

Have you set the installation packages up correctly?
Have they got the correct domain name?
Does the account you are using to install the package have sufficient privaledges to install?
The remote console doesn’t update automatically, you have to hit F5.

Have you got the correct ports opened on the server?
Is AvEngine.exe allowed through the server’s firewall?

-By default, it’s tcp/5033 when getting the updates from the mirror (either the mirror on the AMS, or a 2nd level mirror), and standard HTTP port tcp/80 when getting the updates from the Internet (on the client machines).
-All clients need ‘File and Print Sharing’ allowed through the firewall.
-All clients need port tcp/16111 open through the firewall.
-All clients need Simple File sharing turned off. This is found in windows explorer, tools-folder options-view-[last checkbox].
-For AMS Console access from a remote machine, the firewall on the AMS must have ports tcp/16102 and udp/6000 open.

I’ll do that when I get back to the server.

Not a clue. There were only two options and choose the Net Client install.
I followed the directions in the manual I think.

Have they got the correct domain name? Does the account you are using to install the package have sufficient privaledges to install? The remote console doesn't update automatically, you have to hit F5.

The job that is supposed to run on the PC I tried several ways. I put the domain name in and then used DN\UNAME format and then password… I also tried using a local admin account that exists on each laptop in the adnm package installation section. Neither worked.

Account is administrator ->Yes.
I know about F5.

Not an issue. The server and laptops are all on a LAN. This is not SBS, it’s straight WIN2K3 server. The firewall should not be affecting the LAN.
As for the stuff below… I went so far as to logon as local admin and TURN OFF the firewall on the laptop… Still no luck.

Simple fire sharing… Hmmm I’ll have to look at that one. I think I turned that off. Can that be done from a Server or do I have to go to each client?

I am not running any mirrors and only one AMS.

Are you using the right version of AVAST?

http://www.avast.com/eng/download_avast_distr.html at the bottom of the page - you need the managed version with ADMN.

Sorry if I missed the point.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I understood from the explanation on that page that only in special situations do I need to d/l that file. Isn’t the network client part of ADNM and available for deployment just by installed ADNM on a server?

All problems resolved. I must have had some weird problem with getting the Netclient to compile when I setup the package. I resintalled and all’s good now.
