cannot get on access protection working on win98

Just switched over to avast home from avg 7.5, since avg 8 no longer supports win98.

I installed avast 4.8.1169 and none of the resident scanners are working. When I right click the “A” icon and go to “On Access Protection Control” none of the installed providers are started. When I click start on any of them, an error pops up saying “the requested resident task was not found”.

How can I resolve this? It appears that avast is attempting to start system services, which don’t exist in win98. The manual standard scan runs without a problem.

Hi mvl

I’ve done quite a few of these myself lately and something’s definitely odd. Without MS Outlook running, 5 of the 6 avast! scanners/shields/Providers should be loaded, even in “ancient” 98.
Did you uninstall AVG using Control Panel > Add/remove Programs or by downloading & running the latest version of AVG 7.5 and choosing “Uninstall” from the options? Were there any errors reported?

If you’re sure previous AVs completely removed, you could try full uninstall / reinstall.

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel > Add/remove Programs
  2. Restart.
  3. Download and run the Avast Uninstall utility. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
  4. Restart.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html (or the latest very stable pre-release http://public.avast.com/~vlk/4.8.1178/setupeng.exe)
