A relative of mine cannot reach their desktop on account of a virus. Ive heard of an antivirus program made by avast that can run off of a cd or flash drive before you boot to your HDD so that it can clean it out. Is this true? And if so, where can I get it? I looked through the avast site and couldn’t find anything. Mods please move this if this thread is in the wrong board.
The main avast anti-virus program needs to be installed and can’t be run off a CD or USB pen drive.
The avast! Virus Cleaner is a stand alone application but it is only designed to clean infected files from a number of true viruses and worm infections, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html and your relatives symptoms don’t seem to fall under that category.
You may be better trying some on-line scanners, both anti-virus and anti-spyware/malware.
