hello, Ive recently got a virus, and i had avast, but the virus uninstalled it. so i re downloaded avast, but i cant install it, it says that there was an error installing, i tried downloading it again but that didn’t work either. i tried installing in safe didn’t work either, so if you can help me id love it!
Just curious as to what version of Avast you were using?
Download Malwarebytes Free from here and run it. Make sure that you update it to the most recent definitions.

Please post the results of the scan.
Please follow the instructions here regarding other logs that may be required. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
Very interesting that a virus uninstalled Avast.
at least thats what i believe happened, after a scan, i rebooted, and it was gone, and the logs are comeing.
I have to leave here for a while. Someone should pick up on this.
Will you please provide the following information?
- What version of Avast are you using? free, pro, AIS. Version 6.0.1000?
- What other security software do you have installed now and in the past? Firewall, previous antivirus, etc.
- Have you checked add/remove programs or programs and features in control panel to see if Avast is there?
Thanks
free version, the newest one on download.cnet (i dont know the version number) right now i have no other antivirus software installed, in the past i had avast (4?) iobit security 360, returnil system safe, and norton. avast is not installed, i double checked.
OK. I assume that Avast was working correctly until you were infected by this virus? And that you have fully uninstalled the other security software that you listed above?
In the meantime please download the Avast free installer from here http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button.
Download and run the Avast uninstall utility from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and run it for each version 4, 5, and 6. Please do this before trying to reinstall Avast.
In fact, it would probably be best to download and run the uninstall utility for each security product that you listed.
Here is a blog that has each uninstaller listed http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/. You could also visit each software developers website and obtain it from there.
You may want to do this downloading from a computer that is protected.
Has Malwarebytes come up with anything yet?
ok, running the uninstallers, malewarebytes hasn’t found anything yet.
malware bytes returned nothing. im doing the uninstallers now.
I’m wondering what was your experience with this virus? When did it happen? There were issues with a definition update yesterday that were creating false positives. It was fixed on the next update. But that has nothing to do with the disappearance of Avast. Is your computer running normal otherwise?
my computer is running normal, im almost convinced it was the false positives, but i dont know why the program disappered, thanks though!
edit: it happened around 4 pm yesterday (eastern central time)
It happened a little earlier than that for me. Will you please keep us updated on whether or not you are able to get Avast to install?
Thanks
just re-downloaded, from download.cnet.com and still didn’t get an install, it installs, then uninstalls.
What operating system do you have?
Do you receive any error messages?
im running xp service pack 3, the one errorish message, is
there was an error while completing the setup process.
hmm i worried maybe that virus also deleting some windows component that important for installing avast (part of visualbasic maybe :P, like .dll or .ocx files) so try to open command prompt and run as administrator first (if win vista or win 7 in start menu search for cmd and right click “run as administrator”) and then type sfc /scannow
Good idea on the file checker.
Has your system crashed recently? Any blue screen with errors?
Since avast did disappear there may have been some corrupted or maybe missing files. This is very abnormal for this to happen. I’m thinking that even though Malwarebytes found nothing you should go ahead and download and run OTS http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0. The instructions are also in this link. I have notified essexboy who is a malware removal expert. He will be the person who will give instructions on what to do after posting the OTS log file. On how to attach the log please see my attachment.
Was there also a log file to go along with that error message? setuperror.txt?
You didn’t mention anything about a firewall. What firewall are you using?
Also, are you logged on to an administrator account while performing the install? I am searching the forum to see if I can find anything else that may help.
Doing my best here to get this solved. I know this is a lot of questions but this is not turning out to be a simple problem to repair.
ok, im running the deafult windows firewall, i have administrator privileges, its not the admin account, the admin account doesn’t show up(this is the only account) ots, i tried posting the setup log but it was to big, i will add it as an attachment,.
You should search on google for this error:
13.04.2011 17:50:48 system: Executing:C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\vcredist_x86_SP1.exe /q
13.04.2011 17:50:51 system: Executed:C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\vcredist_x86_SP1.exe /q
13.04.2011 17:50:51 system: ERROR: VC redistributable check failed, error 0x000036B1
Maybe you can try to install vcredist_x86_SP1.exe manually.
Thanks for the log file, it helps a bunch.
Could you check in add/remove programs to see if Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable is installed?
Whether or not it is there, please reinstall/install it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en
I would also clean up the previous failed install attempt of Avast using the uninstall utility before trying to install Avast again.
See image attached regarding error.
Thanks, i got it installed, what i had to do was re download the c++ redistributable and uninstall it, then re install it. thansk for all your guys help!
