Cannot install Avast Home on Windows XP and VMware Fusion

I have Avast 4.8 running on a couple of home Window XP machines just fine. I’m trying to migrate to running Windows XP on a Mac under VMware Fusion but having no luck. Here is my setup:

Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 3GB RAM Snow Leopard with latest patches
VMWare Fusion 2.0 or Fusion 3.0 (running 3.0 now but 2.0 does exactly the same thing below)
Guest OS: Clean Windows XP SP3 with latest patches and nothing else.

I install Avast via the full install file from the download site. The last attempt was with build 4.8.1356.0.
The install appears to run fine, but after the OS reboot I get the dreaded: ashDisp.exe (The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). I’ve searched all over and found this error in numerous threads but not much advice that has helped me. I’ve tried installing multiple times over the original install, uninstall from safe-mode using the removal tool and then re-installing, and rolling back my VM state to just the virgin Windows XP SP w/ patches state. None of this works. I’m attaching the setup log for Avast. The only Windows system errors that I see are ones showing that the Avast services did not startup before the timeout.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Stateside.

I’m also looking for a fix to this problem. I get the same message as you do when I try to run Avast Home 4.8 after installation from the official site. A friend has been round to help but we are stuck on this one. Hope someone has the answer ???

Best Regards

Paul.

I’ve got nowhere on this. I’m wondering how it works for some Fusion users and not myself. Did they new-install like myself or import an existing PC image? I’m going to try importing a physical PC with Avast already installed to see if I get any further.

I resolved my problem. I installed the current Avast Beta and everything appears to work. I tried this by installing over the failed 4.8 install and rolling back the VM state to before any Avast product was installed. Both worked.
Another thing that I found was that when I migrated a physical PC running Windows XP SP3 with Avast 4.8 installed, this appeared to work in the VM also.
