Cannot install current free version of Avast

I am trying to install Avast into a custom folder of my choosing. I have a 2nd hard drive where I keep all of my personal data & 3rd party programs as the hard drive where I have Windows 10 Home is installed is reserved for the operating system & games. I am trying to install the program to my 2nd hard disk as D:\Programs, but the program gives the following error when I do:

Avast cannot be installed into the folder you entered.

(The directory cannot be used as an installation folder)

I was able to install it to the directory I specified above on a previous Windows 10 installation using the same current version of the software, & I just re-installed the operating system due to an unrelated problem w/Windows I was having, and the 2nd hard disk is working as I just copied some pictures & music to it. The program shouldn’t be only designed to install into the default C:\Program Files folder, because as I already explained I had it installed to D:\programs before (I have formatted & partitioned it when I re-installed Windows, so there shouldn’t be any conflicts at all).

Can someone please help me to fix this problem because I can’t think of anything that could be causing this error other than a conflict with a previous install of Avast, but I have already formatted & partitioned the 2nd drive (standard one - i.e. in the Disk Manager, it is listed as “healthy, primary partition”), & this being a brand new install of the operating system. I am using the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home, BTW.

Remove avast completely and try again.

  • Remove all avast folders/files
  • Remove all registry entries from avast
  • Reboot
  • Try to install

I thought Avast had to be installed on the main drive with Windows to be able to run ???

No, you can choose a custom folder (not recommended).
But not everything will be installed in that folder as avast requires certain files to be present in the OS folder.

The problem the OP likely is having, is a permission option.
By removing Windows and clean install it, certain permissions/settings are wiped.

Ofcourse it is not smart to install games on the OS drive and security software which is much more important on a second drive

Thanks Eddy, I learn something new everyday
