Cannot install or uninstall Avast Free Antivirus

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit laptop 4GB of RAM, was with Mcafee which I uninstalled with great difficulty, but cleaned the remnants with their MCPR.exe.

Rebooted and ran the Avast online installer which froze at about 95% installed. Waited nearly an hour because I wasn’t supposed to shut the machine. In the end downloaded AvastClear, and booted into Safe Mode. When activated AvastClear that froze as well. Then, I activated Revo Uninstaller which showed that Avast is nearly 800 megabytes? Does this mean that it was installed? Since Revo activates Avast built in uninstaller, it is asking me to repair, change, or uninstall? How can I resolve the issue???

I selected to repair the installation, and it seems to get stuck at the C:\Program Files\Avast\wsc_proxy… This happened before.

Boot in safe mode and try avastclear again.
If it fails, remove avast manually.
Remove all folders/files and registry entries.
