I have been unsuccessful in installing AVAST Home on my Windows 2000 Pro SP4 machine.
I receive an error immediately following the Request-to-scan-at-boot-time dialog box at the end of the installation process. After I click OK, I receive a Windows Application Error that states the application failed to initialize 0x00000005. Additionally, after I restart the Ashavast.exe file does not exist (so indicated by the white icon on the desktop as opposed to the blue avast circle).
I have another machine with XP SP2 running avast just fine.
I have done the following so far to resolve the problem.
Uninstalled via aswclear.exe.
Reinstalled … same problem.
Removed any possible protection programs, EZ Firewall, Spybot, etc.
Ran Norton Uninstall Utility (per advice from another entry within this forum).
Unistalled again via aswclear.exe (cannot use control panel unistall …does not work)
Re-attempted installation … same problem.
The following are the last four lines from the setuplog:
Access denied… are you using the Administrator account?
The resident is ashserve.exe . Ashavast.exe is the splash screen. The icon should have a red cross and not become white…
Everything is strange in your installation…
Can you repair it through Control Panel > Add/Remove programs?
I am using the administrator account … and I cannot repair from the control panel or from the original download. It always seems to believe I do not have it installed. I have to remove it with aswclear.exe to uninstall.
I receive the error if I select Ok to scan at boot time. If I select do not scan at boot time I don’t receive the error but upon rebooting AVAST is not running … ie. the blue avast icon does not appear in my system tray.
I’ve done that since my last post. I removed avast with aswclear.exe. Downloaded the setup program again and re-installed avast with identical results.
What program should be running at startup to give me the blue ball in the system tray? And why is my desktop link to ashavast.exe not able to find the file? … i’ve done a complete hard drive scan to find that exe but cannot find it.
I’ve installed avast before on a windows 2000 machine without any of these problems …
Still no luck … ashdisp.exe is not in the avast directory either. There are files there but everytime I reinstall (after uninstallation and clean download) ashdisp.exe and ashavast.exe are missing.
Any additional help would be greatly appreciated … are there other log files I can post to give more info?
Right click the “a” ball in the Task tray, select Program settings …, and when the user interface opens, click on Logging in the left pane. You should now see the interface similar to the picture below.
My program is not even running nor can I get it to run … so I do not even have the blue ball to change these options. Cannot get ashdisp.exe to run … cuz it does not exist in my installation directory.
After a fresh uninstall and re-installation, before restart, I try to browse the avast installation directory. For a brief moment I can see the Ashdisp.exe file in the folder, but after 1-2 second, the ashdisp.exe file “removes itself” – completely disappearing from the folder. So after restarting, it is nowhere to be found … seems the same thing is happending with Ashavast.exe, but a lot sooner … before the installation is complete.
I found the logging application and set the log level to debug and the following are the contents of the only two log files with data …

Seems like there’s a malware active on your computer that removes avast! executables.
How about sched.exe - is it there? If yes, can you run sched.exe /A:* to schedule a boot-time scan?
