I have a purchased version of adnm. I also cannot log in. Says the target machine actively refused it. It has been running for about 6 months without any issues. I tried uninstalling the admin tools only (no sql database or anything else) but did not work. When I try to start the Avast Management service I get Error 42000. Any ideas? The error.log is located below:

Are you using MSDE or full SQL 2000/2005 server?
Can you please try the AMS Maintenace Tool, SQL Connection button, and make sure all the details are entered correctly? (use the Test button to verify).
I’m using MSDE. By the way, since uninstalling and reinstalling I dont have AMS in my Start–All Programs list. I have to browse the C drive to launch the executable. After hitting the SQL connection button the SQL Server instance appears fine \avast.
Sorry, I did not intend to post the previous reply before finishing. The Database is avast. Login is sa and password full of ***. Should the login be administrator? Error after testing is: Database connection error 0x0000A410 *: Going to check connection to MS SQL Server “server\avast”, using user “sa” …Cannot initialize data source, error 0x80040EE4D…
When uninstalling I did not believe the issue was with the database, so my intention was to leave the database intact. Is there a way to verify it still exists?
The problem is, since you uninstalled the old version of the ADNM but left MSDE there, you probably don’t know the “sa” account password anymore! And that’s why it is impossible to connect to it.
Ok, so uninstall both (Avast Mgmt Tools and MS SQL Server Desktop Engine (avast)) from Add/ Remove programs? Or during the install using setup_admin.exe is there an option to overwrite the existing versions? What’s the best way to resolve this?
Remove both, then install ADNM again. You can pick a custom sa password (rather than use the pre-generated one) just for the case you find yourself in the same situation.
Of course, if you have a backup of the previous DB you can use it (restore the DB from the backup by means of the AMS Maintenance Tool)
