Cannot open links in MS Outlook emails after Avast 7 install

My links will not open in emails.
I have uninstalled “browser protection” in the additional protection area.
I also turned off “mail shield”.
But my links still will not open?

What is your browser ?

Check your default browser settings and ensure that you recheck it is the default browser, that should change the program associations. So that when you click on an internet link it opens the link in your default browser.

In firefox, that is Options, Advanced, General tab, System Defaults and click the Check Now, that should tell you if it is the default or do you want to set as the default.

It is a common problem with Outlook and Messenger and not anything to do with Avast. You need to reset program defaults. Start> Control Panel> All programs and features > Default Programs.

Set a different profile (ie.non Microsoft and then reset to Microsoft)

Thanks, that seemed to fix it.
The new avast auto loaded google chrome.
I removed it from my control panel, but did not reset the browser to use firefox, which was my original default browser.
I might try adding on some of the avast protectio0n I turned off.

Good catch!

Win 7 (64 bit); IE 8.0. WinOffice2010. I’m on day 4 of a free trial (upgrading from Webroot) and had the same problem after automatic update to Avast 7.x. Inadvertently installed Google Chrome, but now uninstalled and IE reset back as default user. Not sure if Chrome installation or Avast 7.x upgrade was the problem, but “the problem” affects all WinOffice programs. Found this link which offers an automatic fix … and after install of the wizard and subsequent reboot all problems fixed! Good luck.

If the above link does not fix problem on your first attempt, ensure Default Programs are set accordingly and retry the wizard. To check Default Programs’ settings:

Start>Default Programs>Set your default programs
[or]
Start>Control Panel>Programs> Default Programs>Set your default programs

Ensure you also check the “Set program access and computer defaults” settings from the Default Programs page so your e-mail and browser program(s) are set/defaulted correctly.

Hope this helps …
