Cannot remove old Avast from system / Error reading new version

I there,

Hopefully, somebody can help me remove/delete my (very) old program version 6.0.1203 from my system. Unfortunately, that’s not possible from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. It says “Error reading product data…”

Downloading newest version doesn’t help either. The software cannot be installed due to an error message.

My (old) OS Win XP Pro.

Thanks for your help.

uninstall tool https://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

Thanks for your promt reaction. I’ll try the tool and get back…

Unfortunately, the uninstall tool did’nt solve the problem :-\

I started in safe mode as described.

You first remove it in the normal way through the Control Panel

You then run the program in regular mode and allow it to reboot to safemode to complete it’s action.

Thanks, but I can’t remove it from Control Panel either. The same error message there, unfortunately…

Download and install Revo Uninstaller Free and follow this example http://www.guidingtech.com/457/revo-uninstaller/

Right click on avast and click on uninstall. According to that link there is a step called “Select an Uninstall Mode” click on Advanced and follow the instructions. Once Revo Uninstaller has completely done it’s job of uninstalling Avast it will say to restart. Click on restart later and allow Revo Uninstaller to scan for leftover information. Once it has found leftover information check all and delete. It will say that some files will be deleted after system restart. Restart your computer and after that use the uninstall tool mentioned by bob3160.

Install a fresh new copy of Avast and after installation it will do a quick start up scan. After that restart your computer manually again and register.

I had a similar problem with avast many years ago that it can’t be deleted via add/remove so I used the Revo Uninstaller Free to force uninstall it
