Cannot run scan, get a message saying there are no endpoints

Having some trouble with my avast program…when I try to run a scan it says there are no endpoints, so the scan won’t start. Under the “Summary” tab the program says “unsecured” but when i click the “fix now” button nothing happens. I’m getting a message that says the system has been stopped or is in an inconsistent state, but hitting the “start now” does nothing. So after this, I tried uninstalling the program in order to re-download it, but it will not uninstall…also re-downloading the program over the old one is resulting in error messages. Any ideas why? Or how to get it working again?

If you agree, I would like to check your system on malware.
It is possible that a some malicious activities in the background affected on avast although avast’s self defense module should protect him but let’s check anyway …

Please download DDS and save it to your Desktop from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/dds/dl/104/

Double click dds to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. DDS.txt and Attach.txt attach back to topic.

Sure, thanks! I can’t post the zip file, so here are the text versions of both.

it seems you are running Norton and avast ?

you need to uninstall one… and then run the vendors removal tool to Clear all leftoverr files that may conflict
Tools here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Norton has expired but yeah, its still installed I think. Avast is the program I’ve been using for the last couple years. Would it be a problem if they are both present?
You should post logs like this, I find it easier to examine them so.

Multiple Antivirus Programs

You are running more than 1 Antivirus program!

AV: avast! Antivirus Disabled/Updated
AV: Norton Internet Security Disabled/Outdated

Running - more than one - antivirus program is not recommended because:

They can conflict with each other.

Report the other antivirus software as malicious.

Antivirus programs use an enormous amount of computer’s resources… actively scanning your computer.

Can cause your computer to become unstable…run slowly and even, in rare cases, BSOD crash…etc
I strongly suggest you uninstall one of them. Which one, is your decision.

----- remove AV leftovers -----

Please visit these webpages for downloading appropriate tools.
It is necessary to download the tool for AV that you decided to remove.

  • Norton/Symantec (best to download the both tools and run them…)
  • avast (avast! AV 5.0-8.0)

Can you peek in this folder and tell me what you see there? Screenshot will do.

C:\Windows\System32ljkb

Would it be a problem if they are both present?
ohh yes,.... a very common problem we see often, novice users sometimes have 3-4 AV running

why you should not install muliple AV explained here
read reply from quietman7 here. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic186533.html

Great! Thanks, this is a good start. Do you want me to post the logs again straight to the board? And I’ve uninstalled Norton and restarted my computer…I’ll look into the websites and check that file in the meantime

For start just check C:\Windows\System32\ljkb folder for me.

Based on what you tell me about the contents of that folder I decide what to deploy in next steps. ;D

Here’s a screenshot of the folder contents

Ok, we will check that stij.exe file.

Please go to: VirusTotal

Click the Choose File button.

Please copy/paste the following text into the ‘File name:’ box:

    C:\Windows\System32\ljkb\stij.exe

Click Open then click the Scan it! button just below.

This will scan the file. Please be patient.

If you get a message saying File already analyzed: click Reanalyse

Once scanned, copy and paste the URL from your browser address bar in your next reply.

Sorry, I’ve tried a few times and I keep getting a message saying the path does not exist. When I search for it on my computer it is still there though.

Have you try to search manualy?

VT > choose file > and manual navigate to the file?

The point is “stij” file be uploaded to the VT for scanning.

I have, and I can’t see what’s wrong. So I go into the C drive, then Windows folder, then system 32…but after that there is no ljkb file (and no sign of stij then, as well). Sp strange though…when I go to the start menu and search the file name it appears just like in the screenshot. Any reason this would happen? Or am I just computer cursed?

Hmm … we’re going to check that additionally.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Under Optional Scan ensure “List BCD” and “Driver MD5” are ticked.

Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
