I have the latest version of Avast free (7.0.1474) and Win7 64. When I’m in the Avast gui and I go to the Settings of something like Shields, Exclusions, and I want to right-click to copy or paste something I can see the outline and shadow of the right and bottom side of the context menu but nothing shows up. I read some other posts about this problem but didn’t find an explanation or fix for it. Is there one?
I also noticed another strange thing with the gui. After awhile the minimize, maximize, and close button on the upper right corner would not work on the right side of my screen. If I moved the window to the left side and moved my mouse cursor over those buttons they would highlight and turn orange color. If I moved it closer to the right side of my screen and moved my mouse over them they would not highlight. I don’t remember how I fixed it. Either I restarted the computer or just closed the gui when it was on the left side of my screen. I haven’t encountered it again yet but I thought that was weird.
Another question I have is about the virus definitions in the Avast folder. I only have two folders right now but each folder is 110 MB in size. Is every virus definition update going to be this large? I don’t have a whole lot of space left on my SSD drive.
Also how does the Cloud Reputation Service work? When I scan a file on my computer does Avast automatically check its database to see if a similar file has been scanned?
Additionally I would like to be able to exit Avast by right clicking the tray icon. I know there’s a longer way to exit the program but I’ve been able to do this for every other AV I’ve used. I know some people would ask why would I need to but if I just want to temporarily exit the AV for some reason (to see if there’s a conflict with a program just from being loaded) then it would be more convenient.
Other than these things I’m pretty impressed with Avast 7. The interface looks very nice and it’s a very full featured program which is even more amazing because it’s free. It is extremely light on resources (although it did use like 100+ MB RAM when it was updating the definitions). The reviews on this have been good so I think it’s a keeper.

can you attach screen shots ?

you can right click tray icon and turn off shields......
but not exit the program completely, that is what malware would try to do, so there is self protection
This has been an ongoing and long term issue for several avast users (me for another) on every program update for some time we have hoped that it will be resolved, but not so.
The problem being there doesn’t seem to be any consistency in the problem I have it in my XP Pro system but not in my win7 32bit netbook and there are others with no problem in XP and some that have problems in win7. So no doubt this kind of inconsistency makes it harder to pin down and resolve.
Just checked again and I don’t even get the outline of the context menu for Exclusions in XP, but still no problem in win7 32bit. I know in the exclusions this isn’t an issue for me as you can still use the keypad shortcuts Ctrl+V (paste) which is presumably what you are trying to do (as there aren’t many options (copy, paste, undo and select all) ?
The problem fixed itself. I don’t know how but the only thing I changed about Avast was the script shield files. I was (and still am) having trouble getting the script shield to work. I read this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=109977.75 and downloaded and replaced the files. Then some time afterwards I accidentally right-clicked on something and saw the context menu come out. Out of curiosity I replaced the old script shield files back to see if that was the cause but the context menu still appears so I have no idea how it got fixed but it did.
I think it is/was unrelated to the script shield, not all areas that have the dropdown context menu are effected for me. Mostly it is the Exclusions in avast on my XP Pro system, e.g. the dropdown context menu for the virus chest works fine.
So it is this kind of inconsistency that makes it hard to find the problem and resolve it.
I tested just about every setting for the context menu and it shows up everytime so I believe it’s fixed, for now. Who knows if it could happen again. It seems Avast has some bugs to work out. I still can’t get script shield working for Firefox or Opera. But I really do like the interface and light resource usage of Avast.
Chrome has always been an issue as it is hard to keep up with its updates and firefox changed something in the 17.0 version that broke how the script shield works, there is a patch for that but it still doesn’t work on Chrome.
