All of a sudden I am unable to send emails using Outlook 2010. I have no problem sending emails using the Verizon website or my iPhone. I was on the phone for over an hour with a Verizon tech support person and we finally realized that the emails are sent if I go to Active Protection, Mail Shield and uncheck “Scan outbound mail (SMTP).”
Should I do this or is it leaving the recipient of my emails unprotected? What is the best way to be able to send emails again? I use Avast 2015.10.0.2208.
Thank you.
Caryl
Should I do this or is it leaving the recipient of my emails unprotected? No it is not ..... most mail providers have spam/virus scanners on there mail servers. and i guess your recipient also have antivirus installed on there machine
Did you import the avast certificate in Outlook?
If not, do so and see if it solves the problem.
You can turn it off…should not have to but you can.
As stated, you may want to try to import Avast Certificate.
How to Get: http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB91
How To Put Into Outlook: https://support.quovadisglobal.com/KB/a101/how-do-i-install-my-digital-certificate-into-outlook.aspx
But simply: Outlook>FILE>OPTIONS>TRUST CENTER>TRUST CENTER SETTINGS>EMAIL SECURITY OPTIONS>IMPORT/EXPORT
Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. However, after trying for hours yesterday to send emails, today there is no problem. I do not know what the probem was, but am glad that whatever it was is now solved. If it happens again I will import the Avast Certificate and if that does not work stop scanning outgoing mail.
Is there any reason that I should import the Certificate, even if it is working?
Thanks again.
Perhaps your ISP’s outgoing server had an issue…not sure why it worked for awhile after turning off outgoing but why waste time trying to debug that since it is good.
If it runs…don’t fool with it…I have Outlook 2010 and Avast when installed put in the plugin and works fine.
If you want to check to see if the certificate is there you can click on your Windows START button in lower left had corner
and type in certmgr.msc …it’ll pop-up in the search and click to run it. It will launch the certificate store where you can go under Trusted Root Certificate Authorities>Certificates and Avast Mail Scanner Root should be listed.

I did what you suggested and found that I have Avast Web/Mail Shield Root. Is that the same or different than the one you noted?
As you said, as long as it is working now I am not going to make any changes in it.
Thanks for your help.
