Cannot stop Free Avast from scanning

I thought I’d do a full scan of my laptop since I noticed quirky things going on. I tried to do a “quick” scan, but it was taking over an hour to do just 4%. ?

I figured I’d do a full scan at bedtime so it ran when I was sleeping.

17 hours later it’s still running. Stuck on ONE picture, is at 48%, and I CANNOT stop it from scanning. even after a Ctrl-Alt-Del shut down. I opened it back up from the start menu and it’s still “scanning”…

Here are some screen shots.

This is when it’s currently running. Stop and pause do not work at all.

So I shut the window and I get this:

then I “stop” it from here. THAT button works:

So I reopen Avast and NOPE… still running and again, the stop and pause buttons dont’ work.

So, just for grins and giggles, I went into task manager and shut it down that way. I then reopened Avast from the start menu and !Viola! IT’S STILL RUNNINGGGGGG !!!

Please help? I’m thinking I’ll just delete it from Add/Remove Programs and reinstall. I downloaded the Free version and did “register”, so will I have to use another email to register it? I forgot if I even gave an email the first time.

Did the stop button work from the small display ? If so press that and then reboot.

Does it still start up scanning ?

If you boot to safe mode what is Avast’s status then ?

It wasn’t running in safe boot so I did a scan then. It went about 70% and got stuck again. It was a different file it got stuck on so i knew it wasnt that. I then couldn’t shut it down like in my original post. Then the computer slowed down to a crawl so I ended up shutting down. When I restarted I took it out via add/remove. Something is slowing down the computer, I’m taking out things one by one. I’m almost positive it has to do with me sharing my thumb drive with it when I fixed the boss’ computer and I knew the risk but it was almost my only option.

If I do a restore will I lose anything? (not a reformat)

I already lost thousands of emails because I kept getting a message “restoring wlm database” and when it finally started up all my hundreds of folders and mail rules were gone. I have about 15 emails in my wlm. I posted on a cnet forum about it and some guy reprimanded me for not backing up. Well obviously! Lol. I wOnt go back there again.

Lets have a quick shufti

THEN
