This has probably been handled before, but I’m at my wit’s end. I have Avast! Pro Antivirus version 5.1.889 which I updated just today. For a variety of reasons stemming from a failure with my itouch, I tried to restore my computer to a pre Windows 7 Svc Pack 1 date. It failed to restore citing my anti-virus, so I disabled Avast for 1 hour only. The restore has continued to fail, and now five hours later after multiple reboots, I cannot turn my File System Shield back on at all. I hit the “Fix Now” button and it states: “The following components could not be started: IM Shield, P2P Shield, File System Shield”. I am not a programmer and I’m not good at digging inside of programs. Why can’t I get this paid service to even turn on?
Help!
Well the latest version of avast pro is 6.0.1091, so I suggest that you download this and do a clean reinstall as having tried a system restore it is likely to have also screwed with avast.
-
Download the latest version of avast Pro 6.0.1091 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
-
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
-
- Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
I appreciate the suggestion, and gave it a try. I was able to uninstall the old version and load the new. Unfortunately, it took my paid license with it, and my old license link has expired. I’m literally on the phone to Avast customer service now as we speak (been on hold for 6 minutes plus–they didn’t say they were closed, but are they?) in the sincere hope I can get a new license considering I paid for 2 years of service.
Ignore the last. I finally pulled my head out of the sand and just requested the license to be resent, so the reload worked perfectly despite my best efforts to screw it up. Thank you very much for your help.
No problem, glad I could help.
