Cannot turn on Avast Firewall.

I had avast on my PC and all was well. Then it expired and there was a couple of months where id no protection before i renewed Avast. Now my PC runs at snails pace especially the internet. The Avast programme says my computer is not fully protected but when I press “fix it” nothing happens. When I try to turn on the firewall, the programme shuts with that little window saying windows encountered a problem and needs to close…
Has anyone any idea what to do?

Try reinstalling avast! antivirus.

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

you may have to also turn off windows firewall!

Hi folks,

There must be something else, because avast and the Windows FW work together as a charm on my Vista,

polonus

Ok. So I uninstalled avast from my computer, then re downloaded version 5.0. The file wouldn’t open, it comes up with an error saying it cannot open the self extract archive. I deleted that file and downloaded version 4.8 and got the same error. What am I doing wrong? I cannot now install avast at all. The good news is that now that i’ve deleted avast, the internet runs at normal speed again! Although now i’ve no anti virus protection. Norton or AVG are beckoning…
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Thanks guys.
