i have tried their tools and it wont uninstal it says self protection is on so turn it off i dont know how and it says try in windows safe mode what is that
ok i see where to go into trouble shooting to turn off self protection but i turn it off and click ok then it is back on automaticly still will not let me unistall with the tool

What tools are you referring to? What is your OS? Are you running 5.0? Did you use the Avast! removal tool at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54385.0 ?-either the add/remove programs dialog in Windows or this tool should remove avast! without turning off self defense. You can turn it off manually at Summary/Settings/Troubleshooting and uncheck “Enable Avast! Self Defense Module”. You should get a pop-up asking if you really want to do that, and be able to click “yes” and turn it off. What other security software are you using? What was your previous AV and how did you unistall it. If you have a broken install, you can try removing from safe mode-F8 key during boot will get you to the menu.
