I ran uninstall and thought it was uninstalled but it isn’t as has files in registry that can not get rid of.Wont reinstall either.
So here I sit with no virus protection.
???
Some registry entries (legacy ones) are created by windows and as such will eventually be deleted by windows, unless what you are talking about aren’t legacy keys ?
What errors are you getting when you try to reinstall ?
Try a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD (if you didn’t already save it), somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do).
Or - Direct download for avast Home (presume this is what you are using), English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
-
- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Thank you and will do as you say and be back with reply as to what happen.i didn’t have the proper uninstaller it seems. And had version from cnet.
You’re welcome.
The Cnet uses an on-line installation in conjunction with avast servers, which has been prone to failure. I always prefer to download the full installation file saved to my HDD (so I have a copy if needs be) and install whilst off-line.
Good luck.
If you need it, there’s an Avast! removal tool available, but as an Avast! Reseller and a computer technician by trade, I can assure you it’s very rarely needed.
I gave the link for the avast Uninstall Utility in my post, after mosie reported registry entries left after an uninstall and inability to reinstall.
