cannot update avast

Just downloaded Avast! HOme4.1. 389. however, there seems to be a problem as i cannot update Avast. The automatic update fails everytime as they say that they cannot connect to the server or the server is down.
Help pls?

Are you sure it’s not a firewall related problem?
Do you use a proxy filter?

We need more information to help you: your OS, browser (and its version), etc.

sorry… my OS is windows XP, browser is IE, i forgot which version. im not sure whether i have a firewall or not. thank you…

Apparently the problem of the server being down has been fixed but,
the notification that the file has been updated is no longer being sent.

Thanks you guys and gals are fast:
Update now works and, the message to let us know when the update has been done is also working.

I’m still recieving the error message that the server is down…

You must be behind a firewall and arent allowing avast to do it’s updates. I also use a firewall ( ZoneAlarm) but, i’m not having any problems with updates.

sorry for the delay in replying, been rather busy lately.
anyway, how do you check to see if you have firewall installed? i dont remember installing any, so unless its an automatic one…

Have you tried doing the update manually>???
Is that still giving you the same error message? ???

Ive tried doing the manual update. it gets stuck at 0% downloading server.def

herring,

Since you are using XP, the built in firewall is probably active and may be causing the problem. Since I do not use XP (using W98SE), I’m not sure how you should set (or disable) the XP firewall. I am sure others here can help you with that.

From what I have read, the XP firewall isn’t very good. Should you decide to disable it, be sure to install another firewall … such as Zone Alarm, Sygate, etc.

welcome herring!
here is what I found on my WinXP Home for your firewall…I don’t know if it would be different for Pro but you could still check it.
HTH,

Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as a computer administrator to complete this procedure.
If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.
You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing.
ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

Can you ping any download server? (see the addresses at FAQ on-line page)?

URL: http://www.iavs.cz/iavs4pro
IP: 62.168.45.69

i can ping all of them except for

IP: 195.70.130.34
and

So, right now, can you update?

no

I’m almost sure it’s an Internet Explorer trouble or firewall…
But you said that only use XP internal firewall and it was disabled.
Can you use IE without problems?

well… if you ignore the countless ads that keep popping up… yeah its fine.
