What vps version?
What OS?
What exactly is the error message? (If you are getting one.)

error: cannot connect to server
it downloads as far as servers.def and stops
I am using broadband so it should not hang, I am also using it VIA a home network

Did you try what Bob suggested in another thread? (firewall access) 
But, did you configure avast connections Settings (Advanced) to DSL and not for dial-up?
