Cannot update CryptoPrevent ...

Okay - I have two issues …

First - my issue is similar to this: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=177653.0

I tried to navigate to www.foolishit.com in Firefox and I got a pop-up from Avast that “Avast Web Shield has blocked access to this site because the certificate sni98231.cloudflaressl.com is invalid” (or “could not be verified”, I’m not sure which.)

This prevents me from accessing the website and also prevents me from using the definitions update feature in CryptoPrevent Free.

Unfortunately, when I went into “customize” Web Shield in the Avast UI and added www.foolishit.com to the excluded websites list, I still got the same error.

Then I tried turning off Web Shield for 10 minutes in Avast, but I was also still not able to update CryptoProtect.

I can probably close out Avast completely or boot into safe mode and update, but that is a lot of trouble to update a definitions file.

(I didn’t re-boot the computer after I changed the Avast Settings, but I would think they would take effect immediately.)

I also didn’t try turning off HTTPS in WebShield yet, but since turning WebShield off altogether didn’t work …

Questions - How do I access the site, and why does turning off Webshield or adding an exception for the site not allow me to access it?

Second - I can log into the forum using Internet Explorer, but not using Firefox. I run AdBlockPlus, uBlock, Disconnect, in Firefox, but I disabled those and added an exception for the forum to the pop-up blocking, but it didn’t work … Suggestions?

To clarify - the FoolishIT issue is on a Windows XP SP3 machine, so perhaps turning off HTTPS scanning will be the solution - although I’m confused why turning off Web Shield altogether temporarily didn’t seem to work …

I’m using win 8.1 and I updated the definitions in CryptoPrevent Free a short while ago. I did have to restart my computer.

I don’t really know much about win XP because I got rid of it years ago.

I hope someone with more knowledge than I have will be able to help you. Some people on the forum are still using win XP.

Lost a long reply b/c I can’t log in here in Firefox and there is no Lazarus or auto-save on this forum in IE.

I know I have to re-boot CP after updating definitions.

I meant that I didn’t re-boot after changing the Avast settings.

I think this is related to HTTPS scanning, but I’m not sure why disabling HTTPS scanning will work when completely disabling web shield didn’t work.

Avast 10.4.2233 Dated 17-Sep-2015
Avast Definitions 151014-0 Dated 14-Oct-2015

Avast Free Antivirus 2015 (says that at the top of the UI - 2015 is NOT mentioned in Add/Remove programs or the about panel).

Engine updates manually, but defs update automatically.

If I turn off HTTPS Streaming and try to connect with Firefox, I still get the message that Avast Web Shield has blocked the site.

If I turn off ALL Avast shields, Firefox connects with no problems.

However, even with all shields off, CP cannot connect and update.

I tried adding CP to the Windows Firewall allowed programs, but even with that and with Avast shields off, it still can’t connect to the update server.

So to summarize - I can connect to FoolishIT.com in Firefox - but have to completely disable AVAST shields to do so - and that shouldn’t be required. I still can’t update CryptoPrevent through the program - but that might not be AVAST related. And I still can’t log in here under Firefox (that is on a machine that is not running AVAST, so it isn’t an AVAST issue, but it is your forum).

Today, CryptoPrevent released a signature update, the first in a long while. It updated thru the program UI. I have no problem accessing foolishit using Firefox with Avast shields active.

You are running Win7, though …

Anyway - I can’t access FoolishIT unless I disable ALL Avast shields, otherwise I get a pop-up that AVAST blocked the site b/c the certificate didn’t match.

(FoolishIT support recommended that I add sni98231.cloudflaressl.com to the excluded sites in Avast rather than foolishit.com and that should help but I haven’t tried that yet.)

I can’t update Cryptomonitor through the program even with AVAST disabled, but that might not be an Avast issue - doesn’t seem to be …

Have you tried turning of Secure DNS in Avast? There has been a reported problem when using WinXP.

I hadn’t heard of Secure DNS, but according to https://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB188 - it is only part of

Avast Premier 2015
Avast Internet Security 2015
Avast Pro Antivirus 2015

I am running Avast Free Antivirus 2015, and I don’t think it has it, but I will check and turn it off if it does.

Would that affect the Cryptomonitor app also?

You are correct. Secure DNS is a feature included only in paid versions. My bad.

Avast Secure DNS is a feature in Avast Premier, Avast Internet Security and Avast Pro Antivirus which secures you against DNS (Domain Name System) hijacking. Some malicious programs can stealthily redirect you from an authentic URL to an inauthentic website to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details you enter.
