I cannot download the virus updates (or Avast updates for that matter).
I have tried to allow “avast*.setup” through the firewall as it suggests but to no avail.
Thanks for help.

What O/S are you using? New windows server O/Ses are pretty locked down, and every time you click the download link, it could point to a different location, so adding them all to the trusted sites would be a PITA.
Download with another machine, then transfer to the server and run from there.
If it’s not a server, let us know what O/S, what browser, and what firewall you’re using to download the updates.
That’s fine, I just wanted to make sure that this wasn’t a Windows 2003 or abover server, because their IE versions come pretty locked down out of the box.
I’m assuming that you’re right clicking your avast icon, going to “Updating”, then clicking the “iAVS Update” button, correct?
The error 0x20000004 is a “server down” error, which means the server is unreachable.
The only thing that I can suggest is that you may have a proxy server? (If you’re ABSOLUTELY sure that the firewall isn’t the problem).
BTW, Avast*.setup added into your firewall probably won’t help. I think the updates are ran from the “ashUpd.exe” file located in your avast installation folder. I would add that into the firewall, and if that doesn’t work, let me know if you have a proxy server.

That error looks like its using whatever settings IE uses, but you’re not using IE. So, if you have a proxy setup on firefox, but not on IE, that could be the problem.
The process that performs the update is indeed “avast.setup” and it is this process that needs to be permitted in your firewall. avast*.setup may well confuse your firewall. So first please try deleting any reference to either in your firewall and forcing it to ask you for permission again.
Let’s clear the air on another point … your use of Firefox and its settings have no effect on avast’s update process.
Most of us do not use a proxy server. However the default in avast is to use the “IE settings” of your system.
As scythe944 has advised you then you if you do use a proxy connection to the Internet then you would need to tell avast about it in:
avast > Program Settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy
If the firewall suggestion above is not effective then let me suggest that you try:
avast > Program Settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy
and there select the “Direct connection (no proxy)” option and then click on the “Test connection” button. Hopefully that will give you a clean connection - if so click on OK. If you have problems please let us know what you see.
I have a similar problem but slightly different. As my name suggests, I’m using Avast home edition on a home install of Windows 7 beta. The install and first update went smoothly. However, Subsequent updates have me puzzled. Why would the server name change to " 74.86.245.122-static.reverse.softlayer.com (74.86.245.122:80)" instead of a Avast server. I looked this up and its not good as it could be connected to a Russian internet crime group. Is there a way to change the server address so it always connects to a proper Avast server? Is this a sign of being infected?
I think you are infected with a virus, because my sister laptop, had the same problem, avast was there just as a mask, and it didnt update, nor run. So I disconnected it from the internet, deleted avast with avast uninstaller, and reinstalled, and updated it from internet, and again disconnected from internet, and made a boot scan, and the new install detected more than 200 infected files, from 8 different virus. And i would recommend anyone having Avast Free or Pro, to protect it with a password. Because there are some worms/trojans/malware that can mess up with avast (and other AntiVirus if it not have password protection), and protecting it with a password, makes that difficult or impossible.
