Cannot update virus definitions

Hi Everyone!

I have been using Avast for years and it has been running great. All of the sudden this week it stopped updating my virus definitions automatically. So I tried to do it manually but that didn’t work either. I turned off my firewall, made sure the connection was direct and not proxy, but it still says “cannot connect to server.”

Any ideas?

have you tried avast repair and reboot ?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

The “cannot connect to server” error is most frequently firewall blocking the avast update.

What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Yes, I have already tried a repair of Avast. I removed it and reinstalled it, but it still didn’t work.

I also tried a manual update, but it is still getting blocked. Nothing from my firewall pops up. I have had the firewall disabled for some time now. I am using Windows Vista with no firewall. I have Windows Security/Windows Firewall turned off.

Any other ideas?

When I tried to repair Avast this is what the debug report said:

Does anyone know what all the errors on the Debug report mean or how to fix them?

Try this…

Download and run: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe

"Try this…

Download and run: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe"

Thank You! That worked. However, I just did a TrojanHunter scan and it found this:

Found trojan file: C:\Users\Jason\Desktop\USB\avast_home_setup(2).exe (Genome.2160)
Found trojan file: C:\Users\Jason\Desktop\USB\avast_home_setup.exe (Genome.2160)
Found trojan file: C:\Users\Jason\Downloads\avast_home_setup.exe (Genome.2160)

What should I do?

false Positive

and i would replace Trojanhunter with malwarebytes

“and i would replace Trojanhunter with malwarebytes”

Thank You! I replaced TH with MB and it found 6 things that TH didn’t!

I really appreciate all the help from everyone. What a great site and a great product!

go to any malware removal forum on the net…you will see that the first tool they try is Malwarebytes
and remember to always update before you quick scan as they release 5-10 updates a day

Thank you! What would you recommend for a free firewall? There is quite a list on the forum thread here that says “links to almost everything”

You’re welcome.

this is my favorite since it is almost fully automatic http://filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/

there are newer version of it…a suite that i have never tried
