Cannot use Software Updater

I posted a topic, “Cannot find Software Updater”, on 16th August. Having turned it on in Components>Security, I am informed, “NOTE: Software Updater is disabled” following Scan>Scan for outdated software. Clicking “Enable” produces a message, “Failed to connect to service”. Have I omitted something?

Have you re-booted the system since making the changes ???

Yes.

I see from your previous topic that you had also problems with your Windows 10 upgrade.
Did you perform a fresh install of Windows 10 after that ?

Yes, I carried out a fresh install of Windows 10 and my programs, which included avast!. I see now a later installation date of 15th August and version 12.2.2276.

Do you imply I should uninstall my current avast! and install afresh?

I suggest to get and run Farbar and attach two log files to your next post (FRST.txt and Addition.txt)
Perhaps they show something that can/is causing the problem.

Eddy
Please find attached the two files as you suggested.
Part of the reason for wanting Software Updater is to be advised of Java updates. It might be of interest that I have downloaded JavaSetup8u101.exe from Java’s own site and I receive a message, “Download failed:” when running it.

Everyone
I thank you all for your patience and efforts to help me. I have solved the issue:

You asked, “Have you re-booted the system since making the changes”. I replied. “Yes”. Having carried out the changes in avast!, I knew I had to restart my PC. I was going on holiday for a few days so powered off the PC and started it on my return. Returning to Settings>Components out of curiosity a short while ago, I saw an underlined “Restart your computer” (or something to that effect) was still present. Clicking that instruction restarted my PC, whereupon Software Updater works and presents me with the expected list of programs. A lesson learnt!

Glad to hear all is well again.
