Canon Pixma 436 on XP Pro 64 bit

Greetings all. This is not avast related but I hope someone here can help me. Purchased a new Canon Pixma 436 printer but it was only when I opened the box and read the manual (some people really do this! LOL) I learned that my XP Pro 64 bit system is not compatible. It works with 32 bit but not 64 bit. Does anyone have a work around or would it be best to return the printer and find one which is compatible. I have searched for info on this and got really confused. Some sites offered drivers for a fee of $75.00 and others were just vague. I’m disappointed as this is not the first time I’ve bought something only to find it won’t work on my system which is still running well and honestly, I don’t need to upgrade to Windows 7 at this stage. Appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi kakapo,

I guess it is compatible with Vista (64 bit) / 7 (32 bit) / 7 (64 bit), so you should check out these driver here: http://driverscollection.com/?H=PIXMA%20MP800&By=Canon&SS=Windows%20XP%2064-bit
That should do the trick. Tell me if it worked out for you, will ye?

Hmm I just found this

Compatibility and system requirements :

Windows 8
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows XP

  • support 32bit and 64bit -

I do not think XP is true 64bit so it should run with a 32bit driver

Thank you both very much for your instant replies.
Polonus, the link you sent me goes to a different printer - a MP800. Is that similar/the same as the one I have? Would this work with my new printer?
Essex Boy, I’m not sure what you mean because I am actually running XP Pro on 64 bit. Do you maybe mean that the XP Pro 64 bit is not the same as the 64 bit for Vista and 7? That it’s not really and truly 64 bit at all? It sure works a lot faster than my notebook running 32 bit. I’m happy to learn that it might work anyway though. Just didn’t want to start the installation in case I have to return the printer. Thank you.

This also indicates it is only OK for XP 32bit (SP2 and SP3) Brochures/Printers/PIXMA/PIXMA-MX436-specifications-brochure.ashx

You will need to rename the file, changing the file type .ashx to .pdf to be able to view it.

I have XP Pro SP3 (32bit) version there is XP Pro SP2 (64bit), so I think it is a proper 64bit OS, whilst it may be able to run 32bit apps the problem is that Cannon probably don’t have an XP 64bit driver.

Thank you. You are all so helpful. Much appreciated. I just phoned Canon NZ and was told there’s no way there are drivers for this printer and XP Pro 64 bit. Parts of the machine just won’t work. But they did offer to swap the machine for one that is compatible with XP Pro 64 bit so I think that’s what I will do. Thank you all so very much.

You’re welcome, nice that they are prepared to at least swap it out for another one; many would say the buyer should have checked before purchase.
