Cant access any functions even though Avast shows up and running...?

I have avast home ed/windows xp sp3, and I have attempted to try to update the prog itself and the vps but i get no response. I can view and access everything except the actual virus scanner and prog updates. I cant add a new version, reinstall or remove the program. the only err msg i get is when I try to manually update the vps using the web, i get the following error: “Cant install vps update. please report the following error codes: version 4.8.1335; SI:0x20000011;ST:0xFFFFFFFF;LE:0x00000000.” the last version of the vps is 2/13. When I attempt to reinstall install the prog it just doesn’t initialize at all. All of the on-access scanner show ok. I have tried to run online scanners and none have found any problems including avast online scanner. Same after system reboot. I also tried trend micro’s rootkit scan and it found nothing and when i tried to use windows add/remove to remove the prog it just doesn’t do anything. any suggestions???

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What is your firewall ?

have had avg and removed it 3 yrs ago with avg uninstall tool And i have spyware doctor but not had it turned on for a while. but avast has worked since then and only now stopped working. Since i noticed avast was not scanning I have tried to install trend micro and avg trail versions but none will boot the install file just like avast installer and i try to run spyware doctor scan and get an err that wont scan either…

Well given the other underlying problems of installing other applications, it is possible that it is something more serious than with just avast.

I would ensure that any remnants of the latest installs avg and trend micros are gone before trying a clean install with avast:

AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Remove Trend Micro’s VA, see http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/viewxml.do?ContentID=EN-1034142&id=EN-1034142#P79_1922

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD (if you haven’t already done that), somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.
There is a possibility that it may be a rootkit as you have already checked, though the error message associated with one (Beagle) of the ones that disables AVs (even with self-defence) is about "invalid win32 application" or words to that effect.
