Can't access email or web.

I have just installed Avast Home 4.8.When I try to retrieve email and use my browser I can’t access anything unless I terminate both Internet Mail and the Web Shield in the
On-AccessScanner.
I’m using Vista Home Premium.I use the latest versions of The Bat! and Opera as my email program and browser.
Thank you for any forthcoming help.

do or did you use any other security application? (antivirus, firewall,…)
(especially norton?)

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.I use Eset Smart Security which has firewall protection.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.

I suppose you’re not using NOD antivirus and avast at the same time?

Thanks for your help.I’m no computer expert but I manage OK.I have Eset Smart Security running but I’m looking to try some other program when my licence expires shortly.I don’t know where to put the settings that you suggested.I disabled Eset’s firewall and it still didn’t work.I thought I’d give Avast a go as Eset Smart Sercurity isn’t the best with Spyware.
Thanks again

The problem is not on the firewall part, but in NOD antivirus…
Disable is not enough for the antivirus part, you need to uninstall it.
Better, remove everything, install avast, then install only the NOD firewall.

It’s unfortunate that of all the Anti-virus and Anti spyware programs that I’ve tried so far it’s only Avast that doesn’t work for me.
I think that I would rather uninstall Avast rather than the Eset program.

It’s your choice…
But avast won’t work and install correctly if you have a second antivirus present in your computer…
