can't access internet after virus removal

Help me!
I have been using avast home edition faithfully for about 2 years on my 4 computers, as well as installing it on many others. Must say I have no complaints at all until now. I just rebuilt a machine with Xp Home, got all my software installed and used it maybe 10 minutes when I got a virus alert. I removed it as usual, but now my comp is a mess and I don’t know what to do. Can’t get online at all. Spent all day googling answers with no luck. If that isnt bad enough, a friend brought over one i built for him a while ago (Xp Pro) and it is doing the exact same thing. Several noticeably issues are that I cannot access windows firewall, any network settings, my taskbar dissappeared (got that back)

Windows Firewall = Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?

Yes = Windows cannot start ICS service

Network Connections is blank. Create a new connection seems to go through the motions but doesnt do it. Network Troubleshooter does nothing

Also system recovery seems to be disabled

In device manager I cannot access properties for my Lan card (nothing appears wrong in device manager)

At this point, I don’t know where to go. I have seen so many different errors. Really hoping not to have to reinstall everything again.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Hi, welcome to the forums.
What is needed is the full file name and path, and the virus ID it was flagged with, please.

Try downloading, installing, updating and scanning with MBAM. Very good antispyware tool.
Post the scan report.

What other security apps to you have on this computer, apart from Avast and the (now non-starting) Windows firewall?

[Edit] it will probably be necessary to download the MBAM installer file from a clean computer, since yours is unlikely to be able to access the internet. The latest updates can be downloaded from here. If this gives you back your internet access, turn on the firewall and re-update, if able. The updates I’ve linked are not refreshed as often as the updates available via the GUI.
