Can't access internet - Avast blocking sites

Avast is stopping internet access. I’m using Windows 11 on new laptop. Turning off web shield didn’t work. Tried trouble shooting various things but has not resolved the issue. Should I uninstall and re install (risk no internet = no protection).

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.
Can you be a little more detailed in how “Avast stopping internet access” ?
e.g. are you getting an Avast alert or error message and if so what (a screenshot may help).

What have you tried ?

What Avast program/s and version number are you using ?

Thanks for your reply David.

Avast premium subscription
Program version 25.5.1014a (build 25.5.10141.726)

A couple of websites have loaded: a news page (once) & my email provider (once) but attachments or links won’t load. I got home page of my bank to load but can’t log in.

Checked Avast set to home & private
I’ve turned off web shield & tried to load website but no good.
Compared Avast & internet set up with someone who shares the Avast sub & also uses Dell laptop.
Tried Avast trouble shooting options
Used FireFox Edge & Avast browsers

Error message examples:
Edge error message: connection for this site [pCloud]
is not secure.
ERR SSL PROTOCOL ERROR

An error occurred during a connection to pCloud. SSL received a record with an incorrect Message Authentication Code.
Error code: SSL ERROR BAD MAC READ

You’re welcome.

Re logging in - Are you using any form of VPN as this can also get in the way of a website loading ?
Essentially it prevents security checking.

I don’t know if this isn’t proving my comment above the quote. Avasts Web Shield acts as a man in the middle to check the security of a site. Now since you have disabled Avast and it still happens would tend to confirm a problem with the site or other function VPN, etc)

Check out this search I did on the problem connection ‘ERR SSL PROTOCOL ERROR’ error.

Same website works fine on my old laptop plus another that are on same Avast sub. It’s not a pCloud issue or my bank email account or news sites. They all worked until I removed the free McAfee trial & installed Avast.

I suspect there ‘may’ be some remnants of McAfee trial remaining.

I don’t know if they have a clean uninstall tool (avast does) to ensure there are no remnants left.

So I did a search on How to remove remnants of McAfee

Not sure if that will help.

Bit the bullet & uninstalled Avast & re installed it. Now websites load& I can access my email pCloud etc.

I ran the MCPR tool as Avast was set to passive mode, said another anti virus was operating. I didn’t see this notification the first time.

Good news.

Looks like the McAfee removal tool did its job.
