Hi. I used Avast! for a number of years and got away from it after a couple of problems with updates. After using Security Essentials for a while
I decided to again try the new Avast! 6. Now I can’t access the internet with IE, Firefox or Opera unless I disable the web shield and then restart the
browser and the enable the web shield. Then all is fine until I reboot and have to do it all over again. With email I have to do the same thing with the mail shield. I would think that Avast! would be programed not to completely block all browsers and email clients by default. What am I missing here? What do I have to do to prevent going through this every time I go online?
The most common cause is your firewall blocking avast rather than the shields blocking internet connections.
But what you are describing certainly isn’t common (and unlikely to be the firewall) as the web shield would either work or not. Certainly this intermittent issue isn’t normal as in effect you aren’t really doing anything positive to effect the working (or not) of the web shield.
It sounds a little like conflict, so how did you remove MSE ?
Hi,
Same problem here. Just bought and installed Avast Internet Security 6.0 and rebooted, no internet access. Firefox cant open a page but IE just gives a C++ error and goes into a loop of crashing and restarting.
I’m using Windows 7 x64, latest windows updates, not much else, its a relatively fresh install. My trial of Avast was up so I uninstalled through the control panel and followed the emailed instructions to install the full version of Avast 6.0.
Edit:
Okay, resolved by adding it to the Windows Firewall “Allowed Programs” list, or just disabling the Windows firewall.
I removed it by uninstalling from the control panel. I suppose it may have left traces but I got the typical security warning from Windows, so I
assume it was removed. But whether MSE left some of itself there or not is not my concern. I don’t see how the firewall is the problem if it is the same
and was not giving me a problem with MSE I could permanently disable the Mail and Web Shields and be fine, but that defeats the whole purpose of having them.
As I said it is unlikely to be the firewall as the web and mail shields would be blocked all the time and no matter if you stopped it and restarted the browser wouldn’t have ant positive effect if it were the firewall or the web shield.
I have never used MSE so I don’t know how reliable its uninstall is or if they even have a removal tool to ensure that all remnants are gone. Any conflict between remnants and avast could present itself in this type of way.
