Can't check mail using Thunderbird

Just set up Registered Internet Security version on windows 8, have to disable Avast to check email, otherwise it does nothing. Any advice here?
Thanks
Tim

does this help? http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB91

if not, give more info…
error messages?
any other security programs / firewall installed
previous used AV…what was it?..and have you removed it?

The problem is back. No other security programs and no error messages. Unless windows firewall is running by default, but when I disable Avast, the mail then continues. Also tried turning off just email shield, wouldn’t work, along with turning off a couple other shields by themselves, didn’t make any difference. Seem to have to disable Avast completely to check my email.

I’m using the Pro, Registered Version of Avast, if I can’t check my email and can’t get help, can I get a refund?
Could not contact Tech Support by logging in, says unverified or unregistered. I’ve registered with about 4 different emails for numerous machine.
Thanks

have you tried avast repair option from ad/remove - change programs ?

i see you are using Gmail…
google protect all Gmail accounts in/out with postini spam/virus filter using two AV engines from Authentium and McAfee… so your mail is still secure even if you dont get this to work

What’s odd is it works sometimes, and sometimes if I change the settings back and forth, then next time it might not. Always works on my Windows7 Laptop. Only having problem on my Windows8 laptop, may not even be related but it’s frustrating.

No, I had just installed and registered it on this machine, it’s brand new.

Is Windows Defender disabled?

No, I had just installed and registered it on this machine, it's brand new.
did it come with a factory installed trail AV..... like Norton / McAfee / TrendMicro ? if so, have you uninstalled this ? did you run the vendors removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict? tools found here. http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Came with factory installed McAfee which was the first thing I uninstalled. Just downloaded and ran the program you suggested. I wished they wouldn’t put that garbage on computers that I pay for… We’ll see if that was the problem, thanks.
