can't complete avast set up process!

hello, new to the forum. i seem to have some sort of virus. just a few days ago, my browser started to randomly freeze and shut down while browsing. this has happened before months ago but someone recommended i used malwarebytes anti-malware and it did the trick, everything was fine.

i’ve ran malwarebytes and cleaned out 4 trojans…i ran it again in safemode and it found some sort of “trojan-dropin” i believe it was called, so i cleaned that.

i still can’t update my anti-virus (mcafee)…i used avast a few years ago and rarely had problems, w/ mcafee, i seem get problems w/ it more frequently so i figured i’ll uninstall mcafee and download avast.

before i go on, is the mcafee website down? or is this virus not allowing me to access the website? because of this i can’t update mcafee, i can’t use the virtual tech, i can’t re-install it. when i go on the website it says “the specific method is not supported”

okay so back to the avast download, i get the set up started and right off the bat i get an error so i can’t complete the set up. here’s the set up log:

PLEASE HELP!!!

Find and download CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/). Install it and reboot offline (unplugged from the internet)

Shut off XPs system restore. Use its TOOLS area to remove any and all traces fo Avast or other AV application it can find. Then run it completely to remove orphan registry entries as well as purge your temporary internet files.

Reboot. Plug back into the internet. Install avast from a clean source (one that has nothing to do with your computer. eg. zip drive, CD) and tell it to scan on reboot. Reboot immediatly following the reinstall.

Once the system comes up turn on XP system restore.

Software to consider:

Dial-a-fix by lunarsoft (google it). It automates dozens of MS whitepaper recommendations to fix things like Windows update problems, corrupt IE, etc. NOTE: if you use this be sure to create a new restore point!

hope it helps

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

After that, try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.
