can't connect to interent after installing avast free

I installed Avast free tonight and I could not connect to the internet after the installation. I uninstalled and now I can connect. Not too familiar with the product so I am not sure if I needed to change some settings.

Vista Business SP1
Dell Inspiron 531
AMD Athlon Core Duo

do or did you use any other security programs (like firewall, antivirus, antispyware,…)
was there a pre-installed security software?

If you haven’t got avast installed it is going to be somewhat difficult to find why the problem existed. Answering onlysomeone’s questions may help in that regard.

You could have Terminated the Web Shield provider and that would have allowed you to connect (and saved uninstalling), because that is most likely being blocked.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

If no other AV installed, install avast again and if the same issue is there then check and answer the following. If you have another AV installed you should uninstall that before installing avast.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

I did not have anyother AV installed. Long story, but I was directed to unistall my Trend Micro suite while online (by MS tech troubleshooting sp1). Trend Micro uninstalled fine through add/remove. I then went online (against better judgement) with no av protection, but Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and a NAT router. I downloaded Avast and everything went fine and it showed it was running (I believe an A and I ball in the icon tray). I tried connecting and I got an error in left corner saying (from memory) website found, waiting for reply. But it would not connect. I then scanned with MBAM and it located something I thought was a potential problem, but I now think was related to MS remotely logging in. I wanted to get back online, so I unistalled Avast, reinstalled Trend (back to the bloatware for now) and then performed a few online scans (all which were clean). I wasn’t too sure exactly what web shield and the other options were, so I guess I should study up a little before trying again. When I do install again I will use your advice if I have the same problem.

Thanks for you help.

Feel free to ask for help
Welcome to avast forums.

Quick response and thanks. I’ve got some work tonight and tomorrow so I will reinstall over the weekend.
