im a new user and when web shield is on, i cant connect to internet. i have sbc dsl. i tried to follow the description from the FAQs but i cant understand it. i use McAfee. can someone tell me how to set teh settings for mcafee so that internet works while web shield is on.

If you are refering to mcafee antivirus then the the answer is simple, you can’t have two resident avs running at the same time. You will have to decide which one you want to keep and completely uninstall the other. What you are experiencing is a conflict between the two.

Welcome to the forums, aznbook.

Since this is the avast forum, there are not many of us who will know how to set up McAfee as you are asking. In fact, many of us, including myself, are former users of McAfee … until we found the best av service, avast!

As oldman stated above, if you are using 2 av programs, you need to decide which one you want to keep and completely uninstall the other one. Using 2 resident av programs actually give your computer less protection than one alone. We hope you will keep avast and delete McAfee.

Whatever av you use to have or if you now have 2, removing an av service with “Add/remove programs” alone will not delete all that needs to be deleted. They will leave behind files … and worse, registry entries … that will interfer with, or be detected by, whatever av program you intend to use now. It is proper to first use “Add/remove programs” to remove whichever you do not want but then you need to use an uninstaller supplied by the deleted av program’s website to remove the left-behind stuff.

By the way, in rereading your post, perhaps you mistakingly typed MvAfee instead of avast. If this is so, please post again so that we can offer the proper help.

If you have a McAfee suite that includes a firewall ensure that it allows ashWebSv.exe internet access.

As the other have already said it isn’t recommended to have two resident AVs installed. If you have a suite that includes the McAfee AV you would have to uninstall that part. You may not be able to do that without uninstalling the suite and do a custom reinstall, excluding the AV component.

i put ashWebsv.exe as a program with full access to the internet, inbound and outbound. i uninstalled the mcafee av as well and the internet still doesnt work when web shield is on.

What steps did you take to uninstall McAfee?

I have Avast and it suddenly stopped allowing me to get on the Internet unless I turn off on-access protection. I recently installed a secure wireless router and I don’t know if that could be the problem or not. But, it won’t allow me on unsecure sites either. I use Mozilla, but it won’t work in IE either. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

If you need, you can find many free versions of these registry cleaners here:

It would be better if you open your own thread… here, advices for you and aznbook could be messed.
When you start a new thread, please, post more info:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? How did you uninstall it before installing avast?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.

Thanks, I will start my own thread right now and add the information you talked about.
