Can't connect to nntp server

Since installing Avast 4.6 trial, I have been unable to access nntp servers. I have tried both Outlook Express and Free Agent. I have had access in the past.

OE tells me it is “Unable to connect to the server” with the following details:
Configuration:
Account: discussion.autodesk.com
Server: discussion.autodesk.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119

Using:
XP Pro, service pack 2
Outlook Express 6.00.29
Netgear router
Actiontec dsl modem
Trying to access discussions.autodesk.com

Thanks in advance

Well I couldn’t get to it either, but I can get to other news groups/Usenet, so there may be something else like ‘this server requires me to log in’ and those details are missing or incorrect or requires secure log on ?

My error may have been because I didn’t have a news account set-up for this news group.

Welcome to the forums, mkweaver.

I got to their main page at the below link. Maybe you can go from there to solve the problem.

I hope this helps you.

Good find Charley, visiting the ‘Forum’ main page and clicking one topic. This gives the two options, Web Browser or News Reader, I clicked the News Reader and it immediately opened OE, created a news account and downloaded the headers of the discussion.

So it is working for me with OE and web shield enabled.

It’s still not working for me. Sounds like it’s something other than Avast causing the problem.

Thanks for the help.

It does look that way, unfortunately I can’t think of anything that might cause this, perhaps a google search for ‘Can’t connect to nntp server’ without the quotes.

Maybe you can:

Add the following line to the [MailScanner] section of \data\avast4.ini:

Log=20

Then generate some traffic, simulate the problem (i.e. force the avast mail scanner to time out by receiving/sending News) and then post here the contents of the file \data\log\aswMaiSv.log
