Cant disable self-defense

Hello

Ok, seriously…I’ve been trying to uninstall Avast to no avail. I have downloaded both “aswClear.exe” as well as “aswclear5.exe”, but none of them will work because it says I have to disable the self-defense module.

In settings in the GUI, you can apparently tick and untick the Avast self-defense module, but this doesnt work! When I untick it and click OK, and then check the settings again, its ticked back automatically.

For reasons that may be unrelated, I cannot boot up my system in fail-safe mode either.

So are there any other options for uninstalling (control panel uninstall doesnt work)?

Seriously, I’m having more trouble with this anti-virus than Ive had with any actual virus so far…

Hello Reject and welcome to the forum.

You are unable to boot into Safe Mode?

What version of Avast do you have?
What product of Avast do you have?
What other security software do you currently have on your machine or in the past (antivirus, firewall, other security software)?

Wow, ok…quick reply, thanks

Yes, when I try to boot to fail-safe, the computer will automatically reboot before I reach the OS gui. But like I said, that could be totally unrelated to Avast.

I’m running Avast Free, version 5.0.418

I’m also running Outpost Firewall 2009, Ad-aware and Spy-Bot S&D. I fail to see how any of these would affect Avast though…

Edit: btw, I’m running Win XP, SP3

What happens if you turn your machine off, then as it starts up hit F8 repeatedly…this should bring it into Safe Mode. Did you try this.

Quick? I type fast. ;D

Yeah, I do get the boot-options when pressing F8 at start-up. But for some reason, it reboots automatically when loading the different files. It seems to stop and reboot at sptd.sys, which seems related to Daemon Tools (tried downloading an updated file, but didnt work). Anyway, thats a totally different topic I guess.

No other way of solving this other than through fail-safe mode?

Do you already have the Avast Uninstall Utility Tool downloaded onto your HDD? If so, when you are in Safe Mode, run this tool. There is a drop down menu and you pick the product(s) you need to uninstall…then reboot.

If you are having issues with your machine, I would also suggest running an MBAM scan. Let me know if you want me to help you with this.

I have tried MBAM, Ad-Aware and Spybot. There doesnt seem to be any malware infections on my system.

I guess I just have to solve not being able to boot to fail-safe mode first. Thanks for your help, mate!

Where you able to uninstall Avast with my instructions?

Also, Ad-aware is now considered obsolete since MBAM has replaced it. You may want to consider uninstalling it per the vendor’s instructions.

May I ask why you are uninstalling Avast? Are you having problems that I can help you with or upgrade or something else?

No, I’ve still been unsuccesful since I cant access fail-safe mode. Anything else simply wont work.

I’m troubleshooting my computer, thats why I want to uninstall Avast. I dont have malware or trojans, but something is requesting read/write access constantly, cause I can hear the HDD working more than it used to.

I have searched for viruses using Avast, but my free trial has expired and I cant download the latest virus-definitions. Anyway, I thought I’d first uninstall some software (including Avast) to see if that makes a difference to my weird HDD-behaviour. If that doesn’t work, I’d have to get another free AV-software.

Though I did find something on your webpage where it said “Get a free license”. I’m not sure what that really means, but I tried signing up for one…

Whether malware or not, 3 really strange things simultaneously on your PC.

Can’t register (or re-register) avast! Free.
Can’t disable self-defense.
Can’t boot in safe mode.

I haven’t got avast! Free in front of me but there should be a “Subscription” or similar tab under “Maintenance” from which you can register for 12 months.
Having done that, or even if you can’t, update the program by downloading and running the latest multi-language installer from avast! server here.
This may fix the problem or at least allow you to disable self-defense and/or uninstall.

Vladimyr: thanks for the response.

I never tried to register Avast, so I cant tell if thats working or not.

The reason for me not being able to boot to safe-mode is an issue with a third party software (Daemon Tools).

I tried the installation file you linked to, but when I try to choose uninstall, I get the same error message as I do when I try to uninstall from Control Panel. It was a good try though!

Well… You have only 30 days of trial period.
Run away from Daemon Tools… They bring much more trouble than happiness.

If you are running the installer for 5.0.677 with an earlier version installed (in your case 5.0.418), there should be an “upgrade” option at the point of installation.

Also, in “Add/Remove Programs”, after clicking “Change/Remove” did you try “Upgrade” or "Repair’?
