can't do predefined scans

I have used avast free edition for years. I recently got an expiration notice and have now installed 5.0, still the free version. I have registered.
My problem: when I go to the Scan Now mode, none of the predefined scans are operational. The four icons are there down the left side, but there are no Start buttons on the right hand side. I went to Create Custom Scan just to see if that was working, and created one and that comes up ok with a start button. But nothing there still for the predefined ones.

Could it have failed to install properly? ???If so how do I go about reinstalling it?
thanks in advance for your help

Ken

by the way I’ve started the custom scan, and it sounds like it’s working, but unlike the old version, there seems to be no way to check progress, see what files are being scanned while in progress, and perhaps most annoying of all, no way to pause the scan.

Did you boot after installing?

Thanks for your response - sorry I had to leave the computer for a couple of hours
Yes, I have rebooted since installing

Your OS…??

Which other security sw is installed (or was installed) on your system…??
For a clean install remove all prior installed AVs completely…!!
For removing avast you can also use this in safe mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Install the latest build. (5.0.545)

AHA!! I was going to ask whether I need to uninstall the old version! OK Thanks Asyn, it’s 1:50 am here in the UK right now and I am ready to crash out , so I won’t try it now, but will do this tomorrow and let you know how it goes…
Many thanks
Ken

You’re welcome…!
Awaiting your feedback…

Hi Asyn - finally got around to doing this, uninstalled all existing versions in safe mode as you suggested and subsequently re-installed latest, and all is fully functional now.

thanks again
Ken

No problem…! Good, it’s solved now…!
