Avast is giving that green update box right now saying there’s new version of program available and I clicked update.
and I waited and waited and it never connected. retried it 10 times and none of them got any data from the server.

Does an manual update work? Right click on the avast icon and choose update)
Do you have a firewall? Maybe the firewall log say something about why the update fail?
Also, are you using Vista? Is UAC enabled?
Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
manual update does not work
I see the update box saying update time took 18 minutes and still nothing.
What firewall are you using? Maybe the firewall is blocking the update, check the firewall log.
Also answer Tech questions, and do what he told you:

I suspect you are not alone … please … please … comply with the request from Tech … I would really like to compare your log with that of another user who appeared to have the same problem.
Never mind, I read the log file and found out that it connects to the internet using nternet explorer connection settings, and I didn’t bother with IE setting so it can’t connect to the internet… This sux…
any way, I got it working now, thx.
And what did you do to solve the problems? This can maybe help others if they have the same problem! 
The Internet Explorer connections settings are the Windows defaults connections.
So, you must bother with them as they’re used sometimes (by other programs than IE).
Anyway, avast should be available to connect using IE settings.
Please answer the other questions or we can’t help further…
