Can't download to new PC

I have downloaded avast anitvirus on my old PC years ago, and had no problems, I recently put together a new PC, loaded with XP SP2, and have not been able to download avast to my new PC, every time I try, it only loads about 549 kb, then says it is done, of course, it won’t work ,since the file is 18 meg, what am I doing wrong, or are there new settings I need to check?

Are you using a download manager ?

Are you downloading from the Avast site ?

I’m going right off the Avast sight, using their downloader, everything is normal, until it gets to about 549 kb, then it just stops, says download complete, the setupeng file is on my PC, but has basically nothing in it. I have tried saving to file, running from the download page, neither gets any farther before shutting down. After download, a page came up with an offer to load Update monitor software, I tried that, and it loaded no problem, so why am I having problems with the anti virus? I recently updated my Windows with 92 meg of update files, and that went fine, so 18 meg should be no problem.

The avast site doesn’t have a downloader, that is something included with your browser (which is ?), have you tried a different browser ?

Are you trying to save the file to your hard disk (Save File As or Save Link As) before you then try to install later, or are you trying to download and install in one operation ?

I’m just clicking on their download, which takes me to the page with the files, as far as saving, I’ve tried saving to hard drive to install later, tried the run option right from the download, no luck. I am not a PC whiz, but I have been downloading and updating files for years, with hardly any problems, I’m wondering since this is a fresh PC, with new O.S., do I need to set up files to accept the new program? or make sure any firewall or security settings aren’t fouling me up? I never get any warnings or faults, so I can’t see the problem with the download. I have no other anti virus software installed, so there shouldn’t be a conflict anywhere. Any suggestions?

In the past week I removed Avast and reinstalled it. I had trouble installing also after downloading from the Avast website. It took me 3 downloads to get it to install, but it did finally work.

  1. try right clicking on the file name link and select Save File As, etc.
  2. since this is a new PC I’m assuming you are using IE7 as your browser (which I asked) which does I believe have some more security hoops for you to jump through, you could try Firefox and see if you have any more joy
  1. You don’t have to pre-accept new programs before you download them.

Try as I suggested use a different browser or the same browser from a different source.

If you would be using the English version of avast, I’m unsure if you tried the download.com link on the avast download page.

My suggestion is never try a download install in one operation (always save the file to your hard disk) if it goes wrong in any way you have to start again, not to mention you would need to reboot after an installation.

Yes, I am running IE7, I tried the ‘save file as’, didn’t change the outcome, still just loads 549 kb, calls it done, and won’t run. I am downloading from the download.com page you are taken to when you click on “download now”, so I am not seeing anything that would cause me to have problems.

Which is why I suggested using a different browser, if for no other reason than elimination or confirmation it is related to IE7 and any additional security, though it shouldn’t download anything at all if it was security related.

Did you actually try to download directly from avast.com and not using download.com, which at times can be very busy. Don’t click the download now button, try this scroll down the page and you will see a link for the English version (directly from avast.com), right click on the Download button (see image) and select Save File As.

Try direct links

I was using Firefox and it took me 3 tries to get a good install.

Gouveia, that link worked first try, thank you very much, Avast is now installed and running on my new PC, just wonder why the link on the Avast site gave me so much trouble. Thanks to all who responded so quickly to my problem, and not making me feel like an idiot ( I do that enough my self). Now to enjoy my new, protected PC !!!

Relax, man. We’re here to help you have the best protection in the word

If you are referring to the download.com link, because it had nothing to do with avast ;D seriously download.com on occasion have ‘download’ issues of being very busy, due no doubt to being very popular.
