Can't Enable On-Access Protection

I just rebooted the pc, and now I can’t enable the On-Access Protection. Normally this runs by itself, I have never stopped it. I noticed the Avast icon now has a circle with a red line symbol on it.

When I try to start it, I get a message saying “the specified privider was not initalized.” I just ran Malwarebytes and nothing was found.

Everything worked fine when I left for work this morning, and no one was on my pc.

Does anyone have any idea of whats going on?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

What provider was it that wasn’t initialised ?

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
As this can leave remnants and that could cause a conflict (there is no time frame for any conflict to rear its head), which is a common reason for this red circle and bar over the avast 4.8 icon.

Was there any reason why you are sticking with 4.8 and not downloading avast 5.0 ?

I did try the repair…didn’t work.

None of the 4 providers listed can be started.

I had all kinds of problems with the 5.0 version. None of my browsers would work after I updated to the new version. I had to go back to the other version.

The only thing I can think of was that I ran a windows onecare safety scan overnight. Do you think this would have anything to do with it?

Thanks for your help.

I haven’t used onecare so I’m not familiar with how it works.

How did you go back to 4.8 ?

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab4 and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save it previously). Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version of avast! 4.8.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one, aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for avast 5.0 and again for 4.8, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest avast 4.8 version, reboot.

Would it help if I showed you what the log viewer says, before I uninstall and install again?

You can, but I’m not to hopeful it will reveal much more than the error message you gave "When I try to start it, I get a message saying “the specified provider was not initalized.”

Hopefully, someone can pick this up as it is just after 2am here and I don’t know how much longer I will be up and around.

Ok, go get some sleep. I’m sure that I’ll be back tomorrow. Maybe someone has an idea before I go through removing and reinstalling.

Thanks for all of the help so far.

Ok, I decided to try to run a scan, and after going through the memory test, I got a message saying that “avast simple user interface cannot load the configuration.”

Guess it’s time to use your suggestion?

I believe that would be better, as avast5 is much better and not much point in wasting too much time chasing a fault on the old version.

Ensure that you follow the steps as laid out.

Thanks again David. Sometimes the simplest things are the best. As a last ditch effort, I decided to reboot again, and now everything is working just fine.

Go figure??!!

I’m going to save your directions in case I have more issues with this version. By the way, is the browser problem prevalent in the 5.0 version?

Well a reboot is something that I usually do first (it can resolve many temporary issues), then again I don’t leave my system on all the time, so it is rebooted regularly.

I didn’t think of it because the issue didn’t start until I rebooted.
