Can't get Avast to run on OE

I’m running Windows 2000 and OE 6. I set up my e-mail account in OE and then installed Avast. I can no longer get my mail. Errors connecting. There is no wizard with 2000. According to the Help file, it should be automatic in Windows 2000. In the help files it says Avast alters your settings , but mine still read the same as when I set the account up. Out of frutration I uninstalled Avast and my e-mail works just fine now.

And it won’t have… it works transparently in background, without need to change any setting.

Did you allow avast to connect into the firewall settings?

I just reinstalled Avast for the third time and everything works now. A little glitch somewhere. :
