cant get avast to run

Ok I had avast running when I first loaded windows in … Months into it all of the sudden I see a red no smokin thingie on my avast ball and it seems to have disabled the mail and the web protection… so I try to restart them and Nothing I try to open the command center and Nothing but it was still running the ash files in the background so I didnt worry to much
But, today I figured I would reinstall avast and everything would be fixed

WRONG!!! I uninstall it 2 times and install both the Home and the Pro not at the same time But seperate times installs I used the Avast uninstaller that is on the website

But this time what is happening is I install and It says complete But nothing comes up no balls No reboot to scan the computer no progran when I double click the avast icon I get lisence key missing

I cant start the avast in my program services or anything

running win home xp
asus MB 1800 amd
nvidia 5500 vid

thanks

When you uninstalled, did you use the avast unistall utility?

http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Use the utility, reboot then install avast.

He said so…

Did you run any registry cleaner?
Did you have any other antivirus in the past, like AVG?

no othe anti virus were ever installed
it seemed Like a windows update may have been the trouble
I also lost my mircosoft anti spyware at the same time

i havent run any reg cleaners yet … I was thinkin\g aboiu that to maybe clear the key that is saying I had a key at one time but not sure that that should matter on a clean install

I am thinking it is either a bad update from windows Or something in the system sevices that was turned off Or maybe just a blocker virus maybe

any help would be greatly appreciated

My apologies :-[ , half asleep and missed that line.

Your signature indicates asus as part of your system. I don’t know if this has any bearing on what is happening to you. Apparently just visiting can infect a computer silently, and avast didn’t detect it when submitted to jotti. Maybe not even the same company, just a thought.

oh the Asus I was refering to is My Motherboard

also seems I cant not complete anyonline scans Like trend micro or any other for that matter they all go through the begining and start scannin only to boot my browser off… so I never see any info on what I may be dealing with

There is nothing unusual in my processes that I can see but you never know they may have embeded it in a system process
and just changed the name like rundll32.exe to Rundll32.exe i had seen that once on my computer

I can run the scan by right clickin the drive but when i reboot I still get the service key not found in an Avast OK box

I thought that was your mobo, just wasn’t sure if the infected site was the same asus, and wasn’t about to go find out myself. ::slight_smile:

You tried others? Did you try mcafee? I’ve used it before, it uses active x, not sure what the others use, or if it would make a difference.

How about hijackthis? A hjt log may be useful.

Av and other security programs being turned off, unable to install avs or do online scans can be a sign of infection. Having said that, these symptoms could often be something else. I think ruling out the possibilty of an infection would be a good start in sorting out your problem.

Today, I had a similar problem to yours. About half the program did not work. Red x, 0 providers running, though web shield and mail scanner showed in task manager. Ball would spin when opening files, no providers (blank panel) showing in on access scanner and a few other asorted things.

In my case uninstall re-install worked. I put this down to the forced update to 4.7.892. I think it went amiss. :-\

A re-install of 744 and manual vps udate caused another forced update, but no problems.

Hang in there, I’m sure this can be worked out.

 Hi Mooof :

Since your problems appear to be Windows Update related ( program(s) other than Avast are
affected ), I recommend you ask the volunteer Microsoft Most Valuable professional(s) on the
forums at http://aumha.net/ for help; most likely they would be aware if one of the recent
Windows Update(s) are causing any problem !? If you go there, you should mention which
specific XP Home you are running .
