I have installed avast (I think), gotten my activation key and entered it, and have the simple user interface. I can’t find any way to get resident protection to run. Help! Thanks.
The resident protection by its name doesn’t have to be run it starts on boot, you don’t have to do anything.
Why do you feel you need to do this ?
What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

I would suggest you modify your post, removing your email, unless you like spam. The forums are publicly available and email addresses could be harvested by a bot.
