Had problems with Avast home edition (saying package being corupted), so I uninstalled it using the Avast unistall tool, and downloaded the latest version.
However, the new setup program crashed immediately after being launched, showing error code 00003EE.
Dunno this error code, so I’m stuck. I’ve tried many downloads but no dice. Can someone explain what went wrong ? and what can I do to repair ?
Many thanks
We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.
Did you search the board for the 00003EE keyword?
Thnx for the quick reply. To answer your questions :
- I’m using Win XP, I trust it is up to date.
- there are no firewall, and no other AV installed (I used to use Kaspersky in the pasrt, but I uninstalled it months ago). Also, no security programs installed.
- events are not showing anything useful, however, from time to time, I have a “blue screen of death” saying PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. This may well brings us back to the message displayed by Avast - unless there are many files corrupted in the machine.
What do you mean by “search the board for the 00003EE error” ? what board ?

Please do NOT use Kaspersky anti-hacker together with Avast!
It seems that Kaspersky writes something in the registry that is picked up by Avast! that makes Avast! think there’s another AV program installed.
Allthough this is not the case (KAH is a firewall, not an anti-virus prog) Avast! will nag you about this.

This is understood. Please note that there are no anti-hacker installed, be it Kaspersky or any other one.
But, are you able to install avast now?
Unfortunately, no. The setup program stops almost immediately, displaying again error code 000003EE.
Did you try a search for 000003EE ? It will return a page of hits like this one, that relates to an asus motherboard’s installed firewall
Please, post the last 100 files of avast log files:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log
The C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 directory is empty.
I guess this is because I needed to uninstall avast before attempting to install it again.
Is there anyway to retrieve the .log files from somewhere else ?
No the logs are gone now.
Do you happen to have Spyware Doctor ?
