For some reason the file will download in full but the install fails with a message saying “install failed”.
I’ve used the avast remover file from avast.com several times and attempted again and the same “install failed”

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Avast was the first one I tried to install. On older versions it worked fine but on the 3 most recient version #'s, that’s when the problems came in.
Is this a new system ?
If so is it not possible that it can configured with an anti-virus or other security software ?
Perhaps I’m reading something into this “Avast was the first one I tried to install” did you try to install anything else ?
Are there any other errors, install failed is somewhat brief, check the windows event viewer (I don’t know if this is what it is called in Vista) and see if there are any errors relating to this.
I’m also wondering if this is a Vista UAC thing, are you installing with administrator privileges ?
Attatched is a log file from the failed install.
The UAC comes up and lets me install with the admin privlages.
